DIAPER CAKE...

So, it's baby season and I've been to a lot of showers lately. If you know me, you know that I don't like showers or really anything where women get together, eat finger foods and act like ladies. I've tried to keep quiet about my feelings toward the infamous "diaper cake", but I just can't hold it in anymore. Can we please talk about this?? I mean let's try to avoid putting the words "diaper" and "cake" together. I don't want to think about eating diapers. EWWW! And please don't put it on the table next to the chicken salad. It doesn't belong there. And can someone please tell me why they all look like wedding cakes?? I know that by sharing my feelings on this, I run the risk of receiving the mother of all diaper cakes and I guess I can deal with that. I mean diapers are diapers, right? Just had to get that out! Anybody with me??

  1. Yes, it's definitely a weird fad. I get that it's cutesy shower decor, but what are you supposed to do with it? Do you flatten out all the little rolled up diapers and use them?

  2. I toooootttally agree. They are creepy and now the mom has to disassemble that giant thing to get a diaper on her baby. Is it weird that I'm just as passionate about people that don't have alcohol at baby showers? I mean, the pregnant one is the only one that can't have a mimosa, right?

  3. you know, i'm sure there will be a lot of hallmarkers ready to throw you a spectacular shower once little art is on his way... so, whoever's planning that shower better note to self! DON'T create a diaper cake for Heather and Aaron when their little guy arrives... haha! (and i somewhat agree, but i also like "traditional" baby shower things (and bridal shower things... yes, i did the "bow bouquet" for my bridal shower...however, we did NOT make toilet paper dresses... wasteful!) :O)

  4. Just want to clarify... not referring to the baby shower that I went to today. It was amazing! Just got me thinking :)

  5. I was surprised to see this image on your blog and as I read it made more and more sense. I'm in agreement with you. I've always thought, "What I big waste of your time and the mother's time later!" Watch, I'll get 3 over the next 5 months. Why don't they just make a real cake? Or if they're dead set on encorporating the diapers...make it a diaper-shaped cake? At least we can stomach that. ;)

  6. what if you didn't call it a cake...maybe you could call it a tower. would that make it better? i had one at one of my showers and it was loaded with little necessities for baby like a hairbrush, socks, clippers, a thermometer, binky, etc. and that is in addition to the diapers! yes, it was a pain to untie everything, i'll give you that...but i needed all those things. diapers especially are expensive, so the "cake" is worth some $$ and saves you a midnight run to target when your baby has pooped out his diaper for the third time in a row and you are so tired from lack of sleep that you didn't realize you were that low on diapers...get what i'm saying?? maybe instead of a diaper cake you could play the game "guess which chocolate candy bar this is that's melted in this here diaper" that's way grosser than the diaper cake, trust me. but then again, i played that game at someone else's shower before i was a mom...once you're a mom, the idea of poop/food really doesn't weird you out anymore. i promise you will catch yourself smelling art's hiney to see if you need to change his diaper, because you aren't going to change it if you don't need to because diapers are expensive! and i'll just stop there for now :-)

  7. I agree with la perfectionist. I don't think its weird. Its cute and they are only held together with a ribbon. When you start paying for diapers you will think differently and will be thankful to get free diapers :)

At my shower I asked for a pack of diapers instead of a lot of gifts because grandparents already bought a ton of stuff. My sister asked everyone to buy a book instead of a card and write who its from on the inside of the cover. Just some ideas!

  8. You're so funny, Heather! I hope you are having a good week. We're leaving town for 2 wks on Fri, so we better get together when we get back.

  9. First of all, I want to say that I'd totally be the girl to make you a diaper cake as a joke now that you've expressed that you are not a fan. I am just horrible like that.

At bridal showers, sometimes they make towel cakes. I know this because at one of the bridal showers thrown for me, there was a towel cake. At one point, one of the towel cake makers commented on how expensive the cake was because I'd chosen such expensive towels. I was pretty much speechless about the whole thing, especially since the bath towels only cost $9.99.

What can I say? Showers of any sort are a little bit weird, and there's just no tactful way to say, "Please no cakes made of something other than cake, and also NO GAMES." Sometimes you just have to sit through it, nodding and smiling, then go home and eat ice cream straight out of the container while wearing sweat pants.
